200 New Mexico Poems: 100 Poems Celebrating the Past, 100 More for the Future, is a dynamic celebration of New Mexico’s centennial through poetry. Its mission is to promote a broader understanding of the state’s unusual beauty and delicate ecology as well as foster a greater awareness of its distinct blend of cultural influences. Above all, the project shows that New Mexico’s enchantment is derived from its people, its stories and literature, and the aesthetics of its environment.

Since its inception, 200 New Mexico Poems has received positive reception and encouragement from people all over the United States. The quantity, quality, and uniqueness of submissions represented are outstanding and represent a wide and varied perspective of the state, which is not limited to residents of the region. New Mexico is often little understood by those who have never visited it and is likewise loved by many who have ventured even briefly across its borders. This collection provides the country, even the world, with a stunning multifaceted and layered interpretation of the state of New Mexico.

This Saturday, May 18th, award winning Latin music group Nosotros will be back at The Performance Space playing live music that encourages dance and movement as we welcome in the spring season. Nosotros seamlessly combines Latin rhythms with the elements of Flamenco, Jazz, Salsa, and Rock, creating an original sound that is unmistakably Nosotros. This will be a show you cannot miss!

REEL New Mexico

On Thursday, April 11, Reel New Mexico is proud to present “Globalized Soul,”

a film by Cynthia Lukas and Kell Stearns, whose “Rumi Returning” drew a capacity crowd last year.

The program starts at 7 p.m.

at La Tienda Center in Eldorado
The Performance Space.

Following in the mystical tradition of “Rumi Returning,” “Globalized Soul: Stories from the Tipping Point to a New World” presents a mystic tour of humanity’s longing for love and peace. It features the spiritual wisdom of the Dalai Lama and sacred activists such as Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bukhari. A lavish visual odyssey, it was filmed in India, Turkey, Morocco, Israel, Mexico, the U.S. and the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Melbourne, Australia and set to the music of Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar.

Arun Ghandi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, pronounced the film “a sensitively made film on peace [that] leaves you with a positive feeling that peace is possible if we know how to build it.”

On Thursday, March 14, Reel New Mexico presents the newly completed documentary feature “Rooted Lands” by Renea Roberts and Nancy Dickenson. The screening starts at 7 p.m. at The Performance Space.

Moving as well as educational, and four years in the making, “Rooted Lands” celebrates with breathtaking cinematography the landscapes and cultures that are central to the identity of Northern New Mexico. At the same time, the film follows residents of Mora and San Miguel counties as they mobilize to protect their communities from potential natural gas development through the use of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The film also spends time with residents living in the oil and gas fields of the San Juan Basin/Four Corners Area, whose lives have been altered to accommodate one of the world’s most powerful industries.

“Rooted Lands” co-producer, director and editor Renea Roberts and executive producer and co-producer Nancy Dickenson will lead a discussion immediately following the screening about the film and the issues it raises. “We hope to bring greater awareness to the issue regionally and to underscore the importance of involvement at all levels to protect our precious watersheds and unique cultures,” Renea Roberts said. Questions on the Wall

A multi-voiced poetry reading that weaves film, images and perspective featuring Catherine Ferguson, Colleen Carias, Katherine Seluja, Laurie Hilton AND guests.

At The Performance Space, Sunday March 17 at 2 pm.

Katherine Seluja speaks in the tradition of nurse poets, has received regional awards for her short stories as well as her poetry. Co-author of Braided Voices, she has been published in numerous journals.

Catherine Ferguson, Galisteo artist, short story writer, featured poet of Malpais Review, co-author of The Sound a Raven Makes. Her poetry and images are featured in whynotapoem production films.

Colleen Carias, poet-filmmaker, her poems appear in journals in print and online. She is a co-author of Braided Voices and producer of why no a poem productions.

Laurie Hilton’s poetry appears in several journals. She is a co-author of Braided Voices, a selection in the last NMWABF.

A free live presentation and book signing by Bernard Lietaer and Jacqui Dunne on their new book, Rethinking Money: How New Currencies Turn Scarcity into Prosperity will be held on March 2nd at The Performance Space at Eldorado from 2-6:00 p.m. Be part of one of THE most important conversations of the year here in Santa Fe.

Communities, businesses and governments around the globe are reconsidering the concept of money. In Rethinking Money, Lietaer and Dunne explore the origins of our current monetary system, built on bank debt and scarcity, revealing the surprising and sometimes shocking ways its unconscious limitations give rise to so many of our current and serious problems.

They will offer real world examples of ordinary people and their communities using new money, working in cooperation with national currencies, to strengthen local economies, create work, and beautify cities.

The Eldorado community is eager to initiate what we hope to be the first of many Salsa Nights at the Performance Spot this Saturday, March 2nd. An introductory salsa class will begin at 8 pm with live music by Nosotors to follow. Nosotros is a fabulous, local Latin band that has been playing in and outside of New Mexico for many years. Nosotros plays a variety of Latin music influenced by Salsa, Cumbia, Cha-Cha, Rock and Jazz. REEL New Mexico Returns

February 21 at 7 p.m. at The Performance Space

We’re fortunate to have a film, “Still Dreaming,” by two of last year’s most popular filmmakers, Jilann Spitzmiller and Hank Rogerson, a husband-and-wife team from Santa Fe. Last year, their award-winning documentary “Shakespeare Behind Bars” gave Reel New Mexico its first Standing Room Only house. This year’s film documents the production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in a New York assisted living facility for aging actors.

This will be a work-in-progress showing for feedback from the audience before the film goes to its final cut. We hope you can attend and we thank you in advance for any mention you can give this exciting production. If you need more information or would like to interview Jilann or Hank, please let me know.
