Geometric Musings

A hidden legacy underlying the arts, architecture and our natural world

For a very long time a weaver of patterns has been busy creating beautiful tapestries out of planetary orbits and molecular interstices. This evening we will peer through a geometers looking-glass into these micro/macro worlds, whose harmonies are guided by Fibonacci of Pisa, and spun into delicate DNA fibers that make up the warp and weft of our proportional being. Megalithic stone workers carve polyhedra for Plato, who inscribes them in the Timaeus, to be assembled by our children someday.  Archimedes kicks his faceted soccer ball toward history’s net and right into the hands of a physicist goalie who shouts ‘Buckminsterfullerene’! Kepler is tangling tetrahedra together, Escher is deconstructing the dodecahedron, and Omar Yaghi creates metal-organic polyhedral frameworks to store hydrogen gas that may someday power our cars.

This muse of geometry can be heard in the tiny concert of atoms, the vasty whorls of galaxies and in the core of an applestar.

Tonight we will observe the maker of patterns, busy on the geometer’s loom, weaving timeless ornamental threads, while Pythagoras arranges his mnemonic triangle, for a moment, in our morning sky…

Reel New Mexico Independent Film Series presents 3 fabulous short films

“El Salon Mexico” is a charming animated adventure set to the music of Aaron Copland. A boy, his burro and his rooster sneak away from home one night to see their first fiesta, never imagining the adventures they will have. The film, funded with a $20,000 New Mexico New Visions grant, was made by Paul Glickman, an Oscar-winning animator, and Tamarind King, a talented young graphic artist and animator who began work on it when she was still in high school. It made the first round in the “animated short” category for an Oscar in 2011 and has won numerous festival awards, including “Best Animation” in the Rome (Georgia) International Film Festival and “Best Animation Short for kids 8-12” in the Kids First Film Festival. Santa Fe filmmaker Michael Zeilik, executive producer of “El Salon Mexico,” will discuss the film.

“The Birds of the Bolsa Chica” was made by Santa Fe filmmaker Hal Ralston, initially so his wife, a teacher, might have something to show her students before a field trip to the Bolsa Chica wetlands. The State of California purchased 880 acres of the wetlands in 1997 for an ecological preserve and restoration was completed in 2004. Ralston made the film to celebrate the birds, who he says are the true owners of the Bolsa Chica. The music soundtrack was added to focus the children’s attention on the actions of the birds. Hal Ralston will discuss his film.

“Community Garden: New Mexico/South Africa” was made by Santa Fe filmmaker Debra Denker to explore what the El Dorado School Community Garden in the community of Eldorado just south of Santa Fe and another community garden in the poor, rural community of Acornhook in South Africa have in common. A lot, she discovered. Both are part of a worldwide community garden movement which, in addition to encouraging production of fresh, nutritious food, benefits their local communities and underscores the importance of water to sustainable food cultivation.  Debra Denker will discuss her film with the Reel New Mexico audience.

The Walking Willows

The WALKING WILLOWS are the new band of acoustic guitarist, vocalist, award winning songwriter and composer Stephen Cohen and double bass player, pianist, vocalist and arranger Rich Hinrichsen. They perform melodic, “emotionally gripping”, creative acoustic music. The two started playing together in 2007, when Rich joined Stephen’s legendary ensemble, the Tree People.

The Tree People were a creative acoustic music ensemble originally formed in the late 1970’s in Eugene, Oregon. Founding members are composer, songwriter, acoustic guitarist and vocalist Stephen Cohen, and Jeff Stier, who plays recorders, flute and percussion. They recorded two albums, The Tree People, in 1979, and Human Voices in 1984. The Tree People disbanded in the mid 1980’s, but unknown to them at the time, the first two albums would later be discovered worldwide and be reissued by record companies in Japan and Spain, leading to a 3rd and last Tree People album, It’s My Story being released by Guerssen Records of Spain in 2010.

Now, as the WALKING WILLOWS, (you might say an offshoot of the Tree People), Stephen Cohen and Rich Hinrichsen are creating, performing and recording new music (with many Tree People songs thrown in for good measure). They have done three Creative Residencies at Centrum, an art organization in Port Townsend, Washington where Stephen and Rich created the Cistern Symphony, a music video/film/work of art created deep underground in the Dan Harpole Cistern in FortWorden, where Centrum is located. Work on a WALKING WILLOWS album, which will be released in the fall of 2012, is in progress. Regional and national tours are planned for the WALKING WILLOWS. The story continues!

Wednesday, December 14 at 6:30 pm, join us for the Eldorado Elementary School Choir holiday performance.  The choir will be accompanied by the Marimba band for some songs.

Thursday, December 15 at 6:30 pm, The Performance Space presents the Local Authors Series.  Join us for readings by six aspiring authors.

Nationally touring folk, roots and world music duo Round Mountain announce a hometown concert in Santa Fe at the Performance Space at La Tienda on November 2nd with Jayme Stone, known as the “Yo-Yo Ma of banjo,” according to Globe and Mail. Round Mountain is quickly becoming a household name in Santa Fe, winning over new fans and delighting regulars with what Seattle venue Egan’s Ballard Jam House calls “original roots music for a 21st century audience.”

Brothers Robby and Char Rothschild present many extremes; Bulgarian zydeco, klezmer and African rhythms, wild bagpipes, trumpet and accordion played by one person at the same time, and beautiful acoustic numbers. While their music is varied it is far from random. There is a solvent behind all these different dry ingredients that allows Round Mountain to blend their sound seamlessly: original songwriting with respect and love for their music.

Two-time Juno-winning banjoist Jayme Stone makes music inspired by folk traditions from around the world. His latest album, Room of Wonders, explores music from Norway, Sweden, Bulgaria,
Brazil, Italy and North America. The repertoire includes a movement from Bach’s French Suite, a Moorish sword-fighting dance and Stone’s lush, edgy originals.  This live music event, just outside Santa Fe, is not to be missed.

From the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont emerges Senayit, a trio capable of guiding its listeners on an intimate journey by awakening a tribal and grounding energy. Front woman and main songwriter, Senayit Tomlinson, was born to create a distinctive and far-reaching life and sound. A woman of Ethiopian heritage, Senayit was raised in New York City and grew up on 80s pop, as well as traditional Chinese, Indian and Hatian music by way of her cultural family. She later studied in Indonesian gamelan music during college. Her sound today, however, is far from chaotic; her dynamic range, vocal expression and poetic style weave an eclectic, even wild thread of sound throughout her honest and accessible lyrics.
Michael Ramirez on bass and Isaac Luxon on drums and percussion complete the trio of Senayit. With a host of musical performance groups under his belt, as well as sound and lighting experience at
venues across the country, Michael brings to the group an insatiable urge for experimentation with sound. Isaac, apprentice to master luthier George Morris and lead guitar player for reggae bands groove Shoes and Mo Ambesa, offers his invaluable lyrical style of drumming, attributed to his natural ear and training in instrumental music.
Recent collaboration with interdisciplinary artist JMoney Fur has allowed the trio of Senayit to tap into its wealth of talents in various performing arts and visual media. Incorporating video,
puppetry, and various multi-dimensional arts, Senayit envelopes you to the point of a visceral, physical connection. It is not just music for your soul but something that is happening to you, around you, and never quite leaves you.

The Bee Eaters Sunday, Sep. 11

The Bee Eaters trace their roots back to musical traditions as diverse as bluegrass, Celtic, jazz and old-time. While today’s new breed often produces an amalgamation of sounds and styles based on a distant view, the Bee Eaters were raised embedded in these traditions, raised to mold, meld, shape them and carry them forward, leaving their own indelible marks in the process.

Brother-sister duo Tristan and Tashina Clarridge, long known and lauded by those steeped in the American fiddle tradition, are joined by hammer dulcimer wizard Simon Chrisman and mandolin virtuoso Dominick Leslie..

Listening to the Bee Eaters is like eavesdropping on a spirited, private conversation. As wonderful as their recorded music is, watching the Bee Eaters in live performance is an exercise in safe danger. They parry and thrust, challenging each other at every moment. Their focus on their music and on each other is tight and complete. Their melodic lines and rhythmic phrases dance (and sometimes roil) over, under and around each other. There is sometimes dissonance but always an ultimate harmony. With the upcoming release of OddFellows Roadon Sept. 6, 2011, the Bee Eaters continue to travel the country performing in clubs, concert halls and festivals, evangelists for their new American acoustic sound.

Perhaps Tony Trischka said it best: “Their impressive ensemble work… leaves me breathless. Their music excites, heals and enriches. Listen often.”

The Black Lillies come to Santa Fe on September 5

Join us Monday, September 5 at 7 pm for the Santa Fe Premier of The Black Lillies.  Tickets $10.

This amazing group is rapidly climbing the charts.  Currently ranked #11 on the National American charts for their album, 100 Miles of Wreckage, they are rising stars and a certain treat for live music fans.

Their Debut album, Whiskey Angel, just won a 2011 Independent Music Audience Choice Award for Best Album, Americana

They are one of only a handful of independent artists to have been featured on the Grand Ole Opry (debuted in June of this year) and have played additional high profile shows such as NPR’s Mountain Stage.  They are featured in the July issue of Relix Magazine and had a song included on the sampler CD enclosed in the magazine.  They’ve also been featured on National Public Radio and have two concert specials currently airing nationwide on PBS  plus they’ve just been selected to be featured on the PBS series “Music Voyager” – whch has showcased artists like Bela Fleck, Marc Broussard, Grupo Fantasma, etc).
